What Is It We Do When We Write Articles Like This One-and How Can We Get Students To Join Us?

SUMMARY: I his article ‘What Is It We Do When We Write Articles Like This One-and How Can We Get Students To Join Us?’ Michael Kleine attempts to explain how to research, with the help of his colleagues. They provide a method of research, and the results of it to show how it worked. This article was directed towards college and high school students. He argues that students should have a method to doing research, and should do it a correct way. He notices that the students were just transcribing sections of text into their own writings.

BEFORE YOU READ:
My friend and I both had the same recent experience writing using sources. Our senior year we had to do a research paper. We had to look up information on specific websites, and watch movies and use information from those sources in our paper. Our English teachers gave us a website and told us which search engines to use. I mostly took quotes from the websites and movies that applied to my opinions of the topic.

QD:
1.Kleine is talking about research papers, which every student should be able to relate to. I’ve had to do a research paper at least once every year at school since I can remember. In the beginning when he talks about the kids in the library not really doing research just copy and pasting information, it kind of reminds me of myself when I was young. Before I got to High School I didn’t fully understand the idea of a research paper, I would just take information and use it without making it my own. Over the years I have learned how to do research papers, because I have had some good teachers who made us do our papers step by step

3. Sources played a big role in the research of Kleines interviews. They made a model as a source to help them with research to use in the interviews. I have used a lot of sources in my past research efforts. A main source in my researches have been my teachers. They have showed me how to research, and where to get information from. The difference between my resource and theirs, is that I had someone hand me information. They thought of everything on their own, and made it almost a mini project or study. The only research I’ve done is gathering information from books or the internet.

4.I would put more thought into my research. I would think more about what I was looking for, before I just went looking for it. I would get more involved with personal stories. I would interview people, to get information from a direct source. I would influence my work by what I heard from others, as Kleine said.

OPINIONS: Personally I didn’t think this article was that interesting. I feel like he drug out his research process too much. It made me lose interest, like I was reading the same thing the whole time. It might be helpful because it stressed how you should interview people and how it helps your research process. The ideas compare to my own experiences because I’ve done research in the past, and I’ve had experiences where I needed to do interviews. I agree that interviews are important and you can get some of the best information from them because using personal experiences can make any article better.

Writing as Conversation

Argument as Conversation

READING RESPONSES:

In his article ‘Argument as Conversation’, Stuart Greene attempts to explain the different types of arguments, and how to use them. He also talks about bringing an argument into a conversation, and the questions you have to ask yourself, to make sure you have a good question or argument. The audience that he gears this to is more for students, around my age. He argues that there are different ways of framing for everything. There are many different types of arguments and ways to go about them. There are different perspecitves on everything, and that you can learn new ones. Everyone has different ways to do things, especially depending on what you do for a living.

BEFORE YOU READ:
I define argument as a disagreement between two or more people. I also define it as having your own side to something and backing it up with factual information, or your own personal beliefs. The word argument is usually used as a disagreement or a fight between people. In an academic setting I believe that the word means more of your side of the story, or what you believe, your argument to the discussion that’s going on. The difference is that one is between two or more people fighting over something, and the other one is simply stating your opinions and backing them up with factual information.

QD:
2. Greene quotes it because he previously stated that “The conversations that have already been going on about a topic are the topic’s historical context.” The passage from Kenneth Burke shows an example of just that, getting involved in someone else’s conversation. The extended metaphor is about a conversation that is very heated. It shows the history of writing, how it originates. It might challenge that there is nothing about framing.
3. To me framing is making yourself some sort of outline to go off of to make sure you do something to your best ability. Framing uses a metaphor dealing with tools we have at hand, people or text. Greene wants to develop good questions to use for good arguments. Framing allows a writer to develop good thoughts and make their writings better.

AE:
2. Greenes article kind of represents a conversation with himself. He frames his argument by creating questions and supporting evidence that backs up his arguments. He shows different sides of arguments through out this article. I believe that Greene practices what he preaches.

 OPINIONS:
I thought that the article was kinda of interesting because I love talking and having conversations, so it sort of appealed to my interests, but I also thought it was kinda of long for that topic. I don’t think it will be that helpful to me because I feel like it was stuff I already knew. I do often find myself in conversations, sometimes I join them without knowing what they are talking about, but I figure it out. I agree with the article, because people base their conversations off of a background or communicate the way they do based on other things, without even knowing it.
